A romantic weekend in Sibiu: 3 days

Sibiu is made for couples: a medieval square that glows at dusk, wine bars in vaulted cellars, and the most dramatic mountain road in Europe an hour away. Three days is the right amount.

Day 1: The grand square

Start in Piața Mare, the main square, and let the afternoon happen: coffee on a terrace, the houses with their watching eyelid windows. The Brukenthal National Museum on the square is one of the oldest museums in Europe, intimate rather than overwhelming, perfect for an hour together before dinner.

Day 2: The lower town

Cross the Bridge of Lies into Piața Mică, then wander down through the lower town where the goldsmiths and potters used to work. The legend says the bridge collapses under liars, so hold hands and tell the truth. The evening belongs to the stairs and alleyways around the Lutheran cathedral tower.

Day 3: The Transfăgărășan

Rent a car or hire a driver and climb the Transfăgărășan to Bâlea Lake, a glacial lake at 2,034 meters ringed by ridgelines. The road is open roughly July to October; in winter the cable car from Bâlea Cascadă does the climb instead. Either way, it is the photo of the trip.
